72 million children around the world are not enrolled in school; Concern Worldwide focuses on providing basic education to those who need it most. Access to education is not only a basic human right, but also a key factor in reducing poverty and child labour.

Our main aim is to ensure access to quality education for the poorest and most marginalised people. But access is not enough. Once in school, children need to be assured of a safe environment enabling them to realise their potential. As a minimum standard, we believe that education must result in sufficient levels of literacy and numeracy. This enables people to lift themselves out of poverty and continue to improve their lives.

For the year 2023, here is the planned action items:

In India, especially Odisha, we are working for two schools primarily as they need infrastructure support in Higher Elementary School in Brahmanapada, Balangir and Panchayat Uchcha Vidyapitha, Baner, Kalahandi.

1. Balangir : Currently, Higher Elementary School in Brahmanapada doesn’t have a boundary so they are facing challenges like encroachment, cows and dogs wander around etc which disturbs the environment for study. The children of the school are studying in veranda as the roofs of the some classroom has cracks and the cements had fallen down.

2. Kalahandi: Panchayat Uchcha Vidyapitha of Baner in Kalahandi

a) The school has cracked roof of a classroom is wide open. In rainy season, the water pours in and the students have to go out to the other areas to adjust during school time. They have put a temporary fix but the ultimate goal is to have a cement roof so that in the future they don’t run into issues.

b) As promotion of Skills Empowerment, Cheer Up Foundation has proposed to the school to train the higher grade students to learn so extra skills which will help them in employment. One of the planned activities is to train them in sewing clothes. For this activity, plan is to provide some sewing machine for training in stitching and dress making in after school hours.
